Erring motorists targeted by police

DRIVERS who ignore the “rules of the road” were targeted during a special police operation in Warrington.
Almost 140 vehicles on six roads in the east of Warrington were stopped for checks during the day with offences including speeding, not obeying traffic signals, driving while using a mobile phone and not wearing a seatbelt.
Local police worked with Warrington Borough Council’s environment enforcement officers, officials from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, the DVLA and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA).
The team targeted hot spot locations in a bid to educate drivers and reinforce the rules of the road.
At Rixton Clay Pitts, 18 vans were stopped. Of these one was seized for having no insurance, one had illegal tyres and one had a series of faults including no brake lights and two illegal tyres.
During the operation on Manchester Road 21 drivers were stopped for driving without a seat belt. The fire service organised for the drivers to watch a road safety DVD.
In Blackbrook Avenue, Padgate, 12 drivers were stopped for driving without a seat belt, two were stopped for using a mobile phone while driving and others for speeding.
Speed checks were carried out in Moss Gate and Ordnance Avenue, where 34 drivers were found exceeding the speed limit and in Glazebrook Lane, six drivers were caught speeding.
Inspector Richard Spedding said: “By working in partnership with other agencies we have been able to have a greater impact on road safety in the area with drivers being educated of the potential dangers to themselves, their passengers and local residents of inappropriate behaviour on local roads.
“The message is clear – we will not tolerate anyone who chooses to ignore the rules of the road. Drivers need to remember that the rules are there for a reason – and they must be adhered to.”
