Town held again at home

A Chris Thompson penalty rescued Warrington Town a point against Wakefield in a scrappy game at Cantilever Park.
The Yellows had the majority of possession and chances but failed to find the killer final ball all their play deserved.
Wakefield took the lead mid way through the second half in spectacular fashion. Demi Kyraicou was gifted possession in his own half and spotted Town keeper Paul Pritchard off his line. The midfielder executed a precise lob from near half way and put the visitors ahead.
However, with the clock running down, Wakefield’s Wayne Shooter was adjudged to have handled inside his own area and Thompson salvaged a point by slotting in to the bottom corner.
The first half was a tedious affair with both keepers having very little to trouble them.
Town nearly went ahead after 10 minutes, Chris Thompson getting behind the Wakefield defence but had his shot blocked .
Joey Dunn’s men had a strong penalty appeal turned down after 25 minutes. River Humphries went over an outstretched leg but following vigorous appeals from players and fans behind the goal, the referee waved play on.
Minutes later Alan Collins went close, again, cutting in off the right wing, the lively winger beat one defender but had his shot smothered by the onrushing Wakefield keeper.
Lawrance Hunter had Wakefield’s best effort of the first half, curling a shot just wide of Pritchard’s right hand post following neat build-up play down the left.
Moments before half time, Town had a second penalty appeal turned down. Alan Collins went down under a challenge from Luke Danville but the referee was well placed to wave away the protests.
The second half followed suit as both teams struggled to find any rhythm before Wakefield keeper Jan Zolna smartly saved Chris Gahgan’s powerful header after finding space in the 6 yard box.
As Town pressed for the opening goal it was Wakefield who took the lead as midfielder Demi Kyraicou made no mistake in lofting the ball over the stranded Pritchard from fully 45 yards.
Town looked for an equaliser by bringing Salmon on for Gahgan and following Shooters handling in the box, Thompson put Town on level terms.
Wakefield nearly stole the points with less than 10 minutes to go, Luke Danville ghosting in at the back post but could only place his header wide of the posts.
In the final minutes Town had the chance to take all three points but Andrew Heald’s powerful header was cleared off the line.
Another disappointing draw severely damaged Town’s play-off hopes.
