Town keep play off hopes alive

WARRINGTON Town produced one of their best performances of the season, beating play off chasing outfit Curzon Ashton 2-0 last night to keep their own play-off hopes alive.
Town, who re-introduced Adam Wade into the starting line up, began the game the brighter of the two sides, backed by a vocal travelling support, with winger Chris Gahgan shooting over early on.
Town were in control of the game, but could not find the last pass to add to their good work, with Alan Collins seeing his square ball going behind the on rushing Chris Thompson.
Warrington took the lead in spectacular fashion, in the 16th minute, when left back Louis Corrigan picked the ball up 35 yards from goal before unleashing a vicious dipping shot that left Curzon keeper David Carnell statuesque as the ball crashed in off the underside of the bar. Two minutes later, Curzon almost found an equaliser, Former Town striker Chris McDonagh reaching a throughball before Pritchard to head towards goal, only to see his header intercepted by River Humphreys, who cleared the ball from his own goalline. Less than 60 seconds later, Town almost went two goals up, when Tom Hardwick saw his powerful header well saved by Carnell, before Gahgan shot into the side netting when through on goal.
Town were in total control of the game, Collins was next to go close, heading over from close range. Curzon almost snatched an equaliser shortly before half time, winger James Ogoo finding himself through on goal, only to be denied by Paul Pritchard in the Town goal. On the stroke of half time, Town went close to going two goals clear, both Collins and centre half Tom Hardwick seeing their shots deflected away by the home defence.
The second half began, as the first half had ended, with Town pushing forward, Collins going close with a cross cum shot that Carnell had to tip over the crossbar. Town midfielder Sam Finley was influential in the performance and it was he who was to go close shortly afterwards, seeing his effort go across the face, after good work by Gahgan. The second goal that Town’s play deserved arrived in the 64th minute when Andy Heald, scored his first goal for the club, shooting home from close range after good work from Gahgan, who got to the byline before pulling it back. After a number of substitutions the home side began to push forward looking to get back into the game, but captain Mike Tomlinson was in excellent form and denied the home side on numerous occasions, helping to deny the home side a clear goalscoring opportunity. It was Heald who was next to go close, seeing his angled drive go narrowly wide of the target before livewire substitute Gavin Salmon saw his powerful drive smack the outside of the post and rebound to safety. The last chance of the game fell to Curzon substitute Joseph Evans, who saw his weak header go wide of Pritchards upright.
The victory saw 6th placed Warrington close the gap on 5th placed Curzon to nine points, with seven games left.
