Town salvage a point

AFTER the heroics of winning at table topping Curzon, Warrington Town were held to a disappointing home draw by lowly Woodley Sports.
Warrington created enough chances to win the game easily but had to rely on a 91st minute equaliser from top scorer Chris Gahgan (pictured top), to salvage a point in a game previously postponed due to the oppsoition being decimated by swine flu.
The first meeting between the two sides this season was a very open affair throughout. Town striker Jimmy McCarthy had a good early chance, however he saw his goalbound effort well saved by visiting keeper Ben Connett when through on goal. From the resultant corner, Gahgan (pictured right) saw his low effort from the edge of the box well saved
by Connett. The visitors were creating a number of chances of their own, with striker Kristian Dennis shooting over when well placed and midfielder Mark Haslem forcing Mottram into a good low save at his near post.
Woodley’s best chance fell to striker Gavin Salmon, who blazed high over the bar, when through on goal. The last chance of the half fell to Gahgan who saw his effort blocked away for a corner, after good work by McCarthy on the byline.
The second half started in much the same manner, with both sides attacking, and their opposition defending stoutly.
Town almost went ahead two minutes into the half, when Woodley defender Danny Jarrett saw his attempted block on a Phil Hadland cross, smack against his own upright and away to safety, striker Tony Evans (pictured left) seeing his effort blocked by Jarrett soon after.
Town thought they had gone ahead in the 57th minute, when Gahgan was on hand to finish after Connett had saved Evans’ initial shot, however the linesman had his flag raised for offside, despite Gahgan appearing to be onside. The visitors took the lead in the 75th minute when left back Gary Furnival dispatched his free kick in off the post,
giving Mottram no chance.
Town began to push forward, looking for a deserved equaliser, defender Mike Grogan shooting wide and Gahgan seeing his angled lob over the advancing Connett go narrowly across the face of the goal. The visitors had a chance to seal the game when midfielder Steve Sarcevic produced a jinking run, but saw his shot go high over the crossbar. Just when it looked like Woodley had held onto the three points, Gahgan popped up to latch onto a throughball to dispatch the ball home beyond the statuesque Connett and earn Town a richly deserved point, against a side who have now drawn nine times this season.

Jimmy Mac takes on the Woodley defence.

Mottram claims the ball watched by the barmy army.

The sun sets on another disappointing afternoon at Cantilever Park.
