LOCAL cat owners who are concerned about leaving their feline friends when restrictions are lifted have been given a ‘paw map’ to help them out of lockdown.
Wendy Thomson, a cat sitter from Thelwall, has been caring for kitties in their own homes across the town for five years and has prepared a guide on how to support pets post lockdown.
The cat population of the UK has risen hugely in lockdown from 7.5 million in 2019 to 12.2 million in 2021 and 27 percent of households now own a cat.
And Wendy, 46, who runs My Three Cats says she’s had lots of calls from new owners who are anxious about leaving their pets when they go away.
She said: “Just as we’ve seen with puppies, lots of families have welcomed a new kitten or cat into their homes in the last year.”
“Now, as restrictions are lifting, they’re returning to work or planning a holiday and are worried about leaving their cat, or sending them to cattery.
“I have clients who really worry about their cats when they go away, so I always send them photos and videos and they even have the option to Facetime them while I’m there if they want the added reassurance”
“While people might think their cat will miss them, many will have lived in very busy homes for the last year and will be thankful of some quiet time!”
Wendy found her cat sitting business was hit drastically by the first lockdown with all holidays cancelled but once the travel restrictions were lifted last summer, people were keen to go away again.
With self-catering holidays and weddings set to start again from April 12th, she’s found people are looking for advice on preparing pets for being left alone.
Wendy has created a paw map for owners with the following tips:
• Where possible, keep your cat in a normal routine when it comes to feeding times
• Make sure they have their favourite toys and treats for while you’re away.
• Ensure beds, dens, cat trees and shelves are accessible so your cat can relax.
• Leave music on so they feel they have compan
• Consider using a cat camera to keep an eye on them or use a cat sitter for peace of mind that they’re safe and happy.
