MP Helen Jones has become a “Parliamentary Champion” for the “UK says No More” campaign.
The campaign which starts tomorrow (Sunday) for a week is dedicated to raising awareness of domestic abuse and sexual violence.
By becoming a Parliamentary Champion, the Warrington North MP will support the campaign and sign a charter of prevention, which has been instigated by Hestia, one of the country’s largest providers of domestic abuse refuges.
She said: “UK says No More” seeks to unite and strengthen communities and public organisations to actively take a stand against domestic abuse and sexual assault.
“Domestic abuse is a particularly heinous crime and, sadly, can occur at any level of our society. We need to support, and protect, the victims who are often too frightened to come forward and who can become subject to ridicule, character assassination and even threats from the perpetrators who are seeking to hide their guilt.
“The British Crime Survey reports that one in four women will be a victim of domestic abuse in their lifetime while one in six men will also be affected. Domestic abuse also accounts for eight per cent of all recorded crime in the UK.
“The campaign will produce resources for individuals and organisations to take action and get involved in ending domestic abuse and sexual violence. “

  1. Very worthy cause. But for clarity, in Helen’s role as a ‘champion’ which involves her signing a charter, what else will she be responsible for doing exactly? How can she best utilise her role as a ‘champion’ locally on the ground for people in her constituency who may find this resource invaluable? I think that it’s a fair question. Doesn’t WBC have teams that deal with issues of domestic abuse? They have according to their website. Maybe Helen could actively work with both WBC and Hestiga and produce some joined up thinking and actions around the issue. Otherwise its looks like just another headline grab with little in the way of anything tangible.
