Residents opposing Western Link Road plan peaceful protest at Mayor making

CAMPAIGNERS opposed to the proposed Warrington Western Link Road and the council’s Preferred Development Option are planning a “peaceful protest” at the town hall on Monday at the annual Mayor making ceremony.

The full council meeting will see Deputy Mayor Cllr Karen Mundry (LAB – Latchford East) officially take over the ceremonial chains as she is sworn in becoming the 135th Mayor of Warrington, replacing Cllr Les Morgan’s (LAB – Latchford West) who resigned in March.

Members of two objection groups –Preferred Development Option and TPT Bypass and Communities United against the Western Link will be at the demonstration.

A petition has also been raised calling for the Mayor to be elected by the town’s population, rather than be appointed by the council with supporters planning to be in attendance outside the Town Hall on the night.

With a decision on funding from the Department for Transport for the Western Link Road due by the end of the month, residents from across Warrington opposing plans for the construction of the Link Road and the council’s Preferred Development Option, will be peacefully gathering outside the Town Hall at 5.00pm ahead of the full council meeting which starts at 5.30pm.

Announcing the objection rally on the Communities United against the Western Link facebook page Helen Gurnani wrote ““Things are hotting up now…. let’s get out there together and show them were not standing for this nonsense. The plans and procedures are outrageous! We need to show how much we care about our town because once it’s gone, it’s gone.”

Also on the group’s Facebook page Lisa Cooper wrote “The Western Link has repercussions for us all in Warrington and affects what will happen in the Local Plan (PDO)”.

“If the Western Link goes ahead then it will make it far, far easier for Warrington Borough Council to push forward with the rest of the draft Local Plan to be implemented too. In the first instance, it’s essential that you do all that can to oppose the Western Link”.

Any one who  cannot attend the rally but wants to register a protest against the Warrington Western Link and would like further details of “Communities United against the Western Link” activities check out their their facebook page or e mail [email protected]
