WELL known local campaigner Dr Michael Murphy has died following a short illness.
He was an active member of Warrington and District Arts Council, Warrington Civic Society, St Mary’s RC Church and the Warrington Club to name but a few.
Michael had a passion for local history studying for an MA in Victorian Literature at the University of Liverpool in 2010 and an MA in Victorian History at the University of Manchester in 2013.
He was well travelled having lived in Italy, South Africa, Gibraltar and London before moving to Warrington in 2008. He became an active member of Warrington Civic Society campaigning on local issues.
His family announced his death, at home yesterday Wednesday (April 11) , following a short illness. He was found lying peacefully in bed at 8 p.m. Funeral and Memorial Service details to follow.
Warrington South MP Faisal Rashid paid tribute to Michael saying: “I am absolutely shocked to hear this said news.
“Michael was a great man and worked in Warrington hard for many years. I was also working with him on a project and found him very passionate for Warrington.
“May his soul rest in peace.”
Michael is pictured in The Pavilion at St. Elphin’s Park enjoying tea and cakes last Sunday.

Very sad. A lovely man and a passionate campaigner.
I had the pleasure of meeting Michael at Warrington Civic Society and while we didn’t always agree on certain issues his passion for Warrington was never in doubt. We had many interesting conversations over the past few years and I know he will be sadly missed by many people. He was one of life’s great characters. RIP Michael
