Volunteers busy laying hedges on Paddington Meadows

VOLUNTEERS have been out laying overgrown hedges on Warrington’s Paddington Meadows.
The 14-strong party from the New Cut Heritage and Ecology group have started work on a major project to restore the hedes into useful habitate for small birds and mammals.
Accompanied by an skilled hedge-layh8ing instructor from the HLF-funded Carbon Landscapes organisation, the party were supposed to be having a training day.
But the volunteers picked up the skills so quickly that more than 40 yards of hedge was laid and preparatory work carried out for a further 30 yards.
The New Cut team know that they face a huge task with so many ancient hedges being neglected for many years but are enthusiastic and determined to improve the habitat for wildlife.
Spokeswoman Anne Price said: “Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day, even though it was hard physical work. Organised into teams of three and four we achieved far more than was expected.
“The creation of this better habitat will certainly benefit wildlife on the meadows and our next step is to begin fundraising to purchase our own tools and equipment.
“The bird nesting season will now bring a necessary halt to this work but in late summer and autumn we can begin again”
Anyone interested in joining the group, enjoying the fresh air and coping with the tough physical nature of hedge laying should contact [email protected] and join the group in the autumn.
