VIDEO: ORFORD Councillor Mike Hannon has voiced his fears at controversial proposals to create a Waste Transfer Station along the gateway to Warrington on Winwick Road.
Cllr Hannon, who is opposing plans by Warrington Borough Council to create the Waste Transfer Station on land next to Winwick Road Skip Hire, fears up to 100 extra vehicle movements a day on the already busy road.
Together with local residents who are opposing the planning application, there are also fears the site will create health hazards and vermin.
Cllr Hannon says the council, who are seeking to save money by creating the facility instead of paying to use one at Widnes, are putting money before peoples’ safety.
He said: “I believe this is more about revenue saving than the environment – not enough thought has been given by the council to the impact it will have on the A49. There will be an extra 100 lorries a day and whichever direction they come from they will have to pass the site once and then pass it again when leaving.
“The site is also too close to residential property. Waste will have to be left overnight and that will lead to vermin.
“I understand the reasoning but this is not the right site for the operation.”
Cllr Hannon also raised concerns about the “official” turning site for vehicles being the Cockhedge roundabout more than a mile away from the site.

I wonder if the health of the Community Transport workers has been factored in to this as they will be surrounded by dust and waste on all 4 sides of their operation on Athlone Rd and based just behind Miles shoulder in the picture.
In addition I wonder how the proposed access to the Peel Hall development from the A49 will add to the congestion. Will the proposed new traffic lights for this access point near the M62 roundabout, slip road etc. do this?
Not to mention the local college, a hotel, pub and hospital also situated very close to the site. How on earth can planners approve this proposal? It’s about time They started listening to the people of Warrington, we do not want this nor the ridiculous proposed developments recently announced to grow the town to a “CITY”. The infrastructure can’t cope now, major improvements required, i.e. A49 bypass.
The council have proved time after time what a bunch of money grabbing whores they are, selling up all the greenbelt land like they are playing monopoly! Just like the government these fools dont seem to care about the people or the land anymore and if we dont do something very soon there will be no going back! Dont get me started on fracking!
