Stay warm and well celebration

OLDER residents in Warrington are being encouraged to stay fit, healthy and well during the cold winter months.

As part of Warrington Borough Council’s ‘Stay Well this Winter’ initiative, a special celebration event is taking place to give local people the opportunity to drop-in and get a range of advice about how to stay fit and well.

The event will take place on Wednesday February 7,11am – 2pm, at The Gateway, 89 Sankey Street, Warrington.

Public health and neighbourhoods officers will be on hand to provide visitors with information, as well as signposting them to local services aimed at improving health and wellbeing for the over 50’s.

The council will also be promoting the ‘11 top tips’ for ageing well in Warrington. The ‘Healthy Ageing’ tips encourage people to get their flu jab, along with a host of other advice about issues such as reducing the risk of falling, eating healthily and getting involved in the community.

Residents are invited to come along to get a free blood pressure check, free foot health check and take part in a variety of art activities provided by BloomingArt and physical activity taster sessions run by LiveWire.

There will also be an opportunity to get advice and guidance on saving money on household bills, a local pharmacist will be available to discuss a range of pharmacy services and there will be information about what’s on offer in your local area.

Lifetime Warrington’s ‘Our Choir’ will be opening the event and a light lunch of soup and a roll will be provided free for the first 100 people through the door.

Cllr Maureen McLaughlin, executive board member for public health and wellbeing, said: “It’s so important that local people, in particular our older and vulnerable residents, stay safe and healthy during the colder months especially when there are spells of bad weather.

“Events like this are a great way of finding out all about how to look after yourself during the winter months. So if you need advice and information, make sure you pop along, meet the team and find out how to stay warm and well.”

There will be a range of organisations attending on the day to provide advice and support including: Alzheimer’s Society, BloomingArt, Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Cheshire Fire and Rescue, Footsteps, Healthwatch, LifeTime Warrington, Warrington Voluntary Action and Warrington Wellbeing.
