PICTURES: HOMES have been evacuated and a road closed following the discovery of an unexploded artillery shell at Latchford, Warrington.
Thelwall Lane has been closed in both directions following the discovery of what is believed to be a World War II ‘unexploded artillery shell’ which was discovered by builders working on a Morris Homes site off Edgewater Park on Tuesday afternoon.
Police have evacuated a number of homes and closed the road as a precaution while awaiting the attendance of an an Explosive Ordance Disposal (EOD ) team.
Local families are being accommodated in a hotel overnight.
A spokesperson for Cheshire Constabulary said: ” The EOD has attended but have been unable to carry out a controlled detonation due to the hours of darkness.
“This is now due to take place tomorrow morning and in the meantime, a cordon is in place around the site as a precautionary measure.”
UPDATED: The shell was safely detonated earlier this morning (Wedesnday) and roads were re-opened.
