Parkrun called off for first time ever

THE weekly parkrun in Warrington’s Victoria Park was cancelled for the first time in three years at the weekend.
Organisers called off the run – which recently took place for the 200th time – because of icy conditions on parts of the course, the main car park and the access road.
Race director Huw Jones said: “Unfortunately I had to take this decision. It was simply too dangerous, cars were sliding on the car park and it was tricky just getting out of your car and keeping upright. I received reports from Warrington Running Club that parts of the course were very icy.
“I briefed the marshals to put on their fluorescent bibs and spread out along the entrance road to the park to warn drivers of the dangerous conditions. They will have already known from the ice on their cars that conditions were sub-zero”.
“There had been no chance for Warrington Borough Council to grit the park roads and car park because the conditions deteriorated rapidly overnight and the place was like an ice rink.
“I’m very grateful to all the marshals who turned out in the freezing conditions and helped manged a very difficult situation. They all give up their time for free in return for the support that they are given when they run.”
The parkrun takes place every Saturday morning at 9am and in addition there will be a Christmas Day parkrun starting at 9am and a New Year’s Day one starting at 10 am.
