Penketh Library to give helping hand this Christmas

Penketh Library is supporting the local foodbank this Christmas by encouraging library users to donate non-perishable food items.

The recently formed Friends of Penketh Library (FOPL) and LiveWire have teamed-up with Warrington Foodbank, who have supplied a donation box which will be displayed in the library.

The foodbank is in frantic need of tinned ham, Christmas puddings and cakes, biscuits, selection boxes, chocolates, and Christmas snacks and nibbles, such as peanuts, to support Warrington residents over the festive season.

Situated on Cario Street in the town centre, Warrington Foodbank has been supporting people across the borough since 2012 – providing food parcels from bases in Hood Manor, Culcheth, Orford, Stockton Heath and Birchwood.

Last year, it supplied almost 5,000 three-day emergency food packages to Warrington families in crisis.

David McDonald, project manager at Warrington Foodbank, said: “We so pleased to be working with FOPL and LiveWire to provide a donation point at Penketh Library this Christmas.

“December is one of the busiest months for the foodbank, with people living in poverty often having to make the choice between feeding themselves and their families or heating their homes during the winter months.

“We don’t think anyone in our community should have to face going hungry. That’s why we provide three days’ nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people in crisis.”

The library will be accepting donations from Monday December 4 until Tuesday December 12.

FOPL is encouraging a surge in donations during its Christmas event on Saturday December 9.

During the event, families are invited to join in the festive cheer with the chance to make door wreaths, table decorations and Christmas cards at the library from 10.30am-12.30pm. Phoenix Choir will entertain the crowds, singing Christmas classics.

Phillip Forshaw, secretary of Friends of Penketh Library, said: “Warrington Foodbank is doing a tremendous job providing support and guidance to those most in need. But they wouldn’t be able to do this without food donations from local residents.

“Please donate as much or as little as you can to support those most in need this Christmas.”

Donations will be accepted during normal library opening hours. Visit https://livewirewarrington.co.uk/library for more information.
