Project to keep youngsters active over half-term

A PROJECT which tackled inactivity among school children at Warrington during the summer holidays is back for October half term.
LiveWire’s Fit, Fed and Read project supported 38 youngsters in Warrington this summer – providing a nutritious lunch as well as multi-sport activities, reading challenges and workshops about healthy living.
Thanks to additional funding, the new initiative will run for longer each day, with children also being provided with a free breakfast.
To help deliver the October project, LiveWire has teamed up with Lucia Davies , who specialises in motivating young people and has worked with the children of the stars, including the Beckhams and the Rooneys.
She will deliver issues based workshops in Warrington before going on to make a TV show with the BBC.
The project is aimed at anyone aged 6-16 who lives in the Latchford area, with the activities being delivered at various venues, including Woolston Hub, Bank Park and Warrington Gymnastics Club,
It will help families who suffer with social isolation during the break, as they cannot afford to do activities, take their children on days out, or invite their friends over, meaning children end up spending most of their holiday indoors.
Paul Flannery from LiveWire who is managing the project, said: “The summer programme was a huge success and really helped combat some of the anti-social behaviour problems in the area.
“This October, we’ll have similar activities on offer including gymnastics, boxing, library reading challenges and arts and crafts.
“We are hoping to engage with new families through this project, as well as supporting the young people who benefited from the summer programme.”
The project is part of the national Fit and Fed campaign – an initiative which was developed in response to research that highlighted the high levels of holiday hunger, isolation, and inactivity amongst young people.
It will run from Monday to Friday October 23-27.
