Escaping to warmer climes for a week or so over winter is tempting when the grey and wet British weather hits. With great prices and cheap flights, you can enjoy a welcome winter break but where?
Tenerife, Canary Islands
Popular all year round, the Canary Islands is the perfect winter sun holiday destination. Unlike other resorts, the islands remain open for business all year round with the same great range of water sports, beach activities and water parks, not forgetting its great range of restaurants and bars. The Middle East is always drenched in sunshine but Oman has long been dwarfed by its neighbours Dubai and Abu Dhabi. But as a winter sun destination, it is certainly growing in popularity. As well as stunning architecture, there are the rugged mountains as a breath-taking backdrop and the waters of the Gulf of Oman to welcome you. With high temperatures and blazing sunshine, you will need sun lotion and plenty of light, loose clothing. Oman does have a reputation for being incredibly hot though, so remember to bring a few bits along to keep you and the family entertained – portable board games, colouring books for the kids, or maybe your smartphone where you could play roulette free on onlineroulette.org.uk. Just ensure you have enough data on your phone first!
Set between Sicily and the North African coast, the winter in Malta is deliciously mild, with low rainfall and five to six hours of glorious sunshine every day. With a turbulent and colourful past, there is plenty to enjoy on Malta with Valletta being the perfect city to stay and explore the islands. Seek out its history as well as activities such as snorkelling and diving, uncovering the many hidden caves and wrecks. Great for a relaxing getaway or pack your walking shoes to follow the trails of ancient Malta.
Cape Town, South Africa
If you fancy something long haul, then take a look at the breath-taking city of Cape Town. A melting pot of cultures, there is so much to do here. Hike the trails of Table Mountain or take a punt on the cable cars, enjoy the scenery of Cale of Good Hope and visit the sobering cell of Nelson Mandela on Robben Island. Enjoy wine tasting trails and mountain bike trails… in fact, there is so much to do, you’ll need a lot longer than a week to enjoy all that is on offer, so why not book for two or three weeks?
If you want sunshine and high temperatures to bask in, there is only one place that should be on your list: Goa in India. With temperatures hovering around 30° even in the winter months, it is the place to enjoy this beach paradise. Goa was a Portuguese colony, unlike the rest of the country and so there is a different story to soak up here. December is busy so if you want fewer crowds, consider January.
