WARRINGTON North MP Helen Jones is promoting Small Business Saturday which is entering its fifth year with the event taking place on December 2.

Small Business Saturday UK is a not-for-profit campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages the UK to support small businesses.

Now in its fifth year, Small Business Saturday is the UK’s most successful small business campaign which last year saw:

  • Customers spending £717m with small businesses on Small Business Saturday, an increase of 15% on the previous year;
  • Over 140,000 tweets were sent out on the day reaching 130 million people, trending on Twitter in the UK and globally;
  • Over 80% of local authorities across the UK actively supported the campaign in a variety of ways, from networking events to free parking, meaning wherever you were in the UK, Small Business Saturday was happening nearby.

Helen said: “Over the past four years hundreds of thousands of small businesses have participated in the campaign with many running special discounts and offers to encourage consumer spending on the day.

“Small independent businesses here in Warrington make an enormous contribution to our community and are one of the things that make our town unique.  People really value the choice they get from smaller shops which add to the character of the area.

“Running a small business can be really hard work with long working hours and, in these difficult times, great uncertainty about the future.  That’s why I want to help promote Small Business Saturday on December 2 and encourage people to shop locally and support businesses in their local communities.’’

  1. Hang on, hang on Helen. Let’s just try and unpick this for one moment. You may want to re-read this first to jog your memory.

    So how does this square with your campaign about the evils of Christmas shopping? Are individuals employed by small businesses somehow different? Are smaller businesses exempt from your criticism? Is it just the large chains that ‘irk’ you? How many bandwagons do you jump on, on an annual basis?
