Swimming team wins top award

The Warriors of Warrington swim team have celebrated being named the “most improved club” at the British Swimming Championships.
Members of the team – who train at LiveWire sites across Warrington – proudly displayed their trophy at their first training session of the season at Orford Jubilee Neighbourhood Hub.
They were awarded the prestigious accolade due to the number of swimmers who achieved their personal best (PB) during the championships.
Coral Farrel Open, Gabrielle Melbourne-Smith, Matthew Domville, Shannon Campbell, Caitlin Shingler, Hugh Takemoto and Alex Watkinson all achieved their best time in a variety of disciplines – with some swimmers achieving their PB in more than one discipline.
A number of swimmers from the club also made the finals of the heats at the meet in Ponds Forge in Sheffield, with some just missing out on a first place finish.
Matthew Domville, aged 18, came second in the Men’s 19 Years and Over 200m Butterfly, 14-
year-old Gabrielle Melbourne-Smith secured second place in the Women’s 13 and 14 Years Butterfly, and Hugh Takemoto, who is 18, just missed out on the top spot in the Men’s 17 and 18 Years 50m Breaststroke and came third in the Men’s 17 and 18 Years 100m Breaststroke.
The club were awarded £5,000 as part of the prize, which will be used to send members of the club to a specialist training camp in Majorca.
Head coach Darren Ashley, said: “The team did fantastically well at this year’s championships. The hard work and dedication that they committed throughout the year really paid off.
“We were overjoyed to have been given this prestigious award and the prize money to take members of the team to the training camp will help them develop further.”
After a summer break, the club are working towards the North West Region Winter Championships, which take place at Manchester Aquatics Centre in November.
