Warrington Wolves to part company with Tony Smith

WARRINGTON Wolves have announced that they will be parting company  with Tony Smith at the end of the current 2017 season.

Smith will leave the club by mutual consent, after nine years in his position as head of coaching and rugby, having taken on the role in March 2009.

In his time at Warrington he guided uthe club to their first Challenge Cup final win in 35 years back in 2009 plus more success in 2010 and 2012. He transformed the team seeing them compete as a top-four side, claiming the League Leaders Shield in both 2011 and 2016, and making three appearances on the big stage in the Grand Final in 2012, 2013 and 2016.

Simon Moran, club owner, said: “We would like to thank Tony for everything he has done for us here at Warrington. He came in 2009 and turned the club around. He’s seen us to four Challenge Cup finals lifting the trophy on three occasions. We’ve also secured two League Leaders’ Shields and made three Grand Final appearances during his time in charge. Once again we thank Tony and wish him all the best in his future.”

Tony Smith added: “I’ve really enjoyed my nine years at the club and feel that it’s now in the best interests of all for us to go in different directions. I’m grateful for the relationship I’ve had with the board, in particular Simon Moran, and I’d like to thank them for their support over the time I’ve been at Warrington. I’d like to think that while this has been a tough year, the club has progressed in the time I’ve been there in many ways, on and off the field, and is now in a position that means they can go on to bigger and greater things. I’d like to thank all the staff and playing staff during my time at the club, as well as all the supporters. I hope you’ve enjoyed the successes we’ve had as much as the players and I have over the years.”

Chief executive Karl Fitzpatrick said: “Since joining, Tony has helped transform the club and it is testimony to his time at Warrington that the club’s expectations have been lifted. Unfortunately, things have not worked out this year but when people reflect back on his time here I’m sure they will do so with many fond memories. I’m sure everyone will show their appreciation for everything he has done for this club at his last game on Saturday 23 September.”
