WARRINGTON Town manager Paul Carden was happy to get the new season underway with a 2-0 win over Rushall Olympic on Saturday.
Goals from Connor Hughes and Joe Mwasile fired the Yellows to three points at Cantilever Park, with six players making their debuts for the club.
Carden said: “We knew it was going to be a tough game, because they’ll take points off plenty of teams.
“I said to the lads before the game, we just have to make sure we get going as soon as possible and obviously there’s no better place to get your first win of the season at home and in the first game.”
As well as goalscoring debutants Hughes and Mwasile, Carden also handed debuts to Liam Hynes, Brad Barnes, Tony Gray and Liam Goulding.
Josh Hine and Rory McKeown also made their second debuts for the club.
Carden said: “I thought there wasn’t too many bad performances really. We can play better as a team, but the work rate’s there. When you’ve got that work rate and the team is new and gelling, there’s always going to be a bit of quality that comes through, which is what happened with Connor Hughes, a great finish in the first half, and Joe coming off the bench and putting the game to bed in the second half.
“We’ve got that bit of depth now and once Jack (Higgins) and Kinny (Gerard Kinsella) get back the squad’s going to be even stronger.
“Right now it’s about getting results on the board, the team getting to know each other more and try and pick up as many points as we can.”
The visiting bench were unhappy with a call six minutes from time where they felt that Yellows midfielder Sean Williams had handled in the box.
The incident, which came when the hosts were 1-0 up, came from a corner where three Rushall efforts were cleared off the line in quick succession.
Carden said: “The linesman flagged for something then put it down, so they were saying he’s flagged for a penalty, but no one knew what he flagged for.
“I think that was the only real effort they had. There was a couple in the first half but second half chance wise we’ve had two or three, and I can’t really remember Tony Mac (McMillan) making a save.”
Warrington are back in action on Tuesday night with a trip to Lancaster City (7.45pm), before they visit Coalville Town on Saturday (3pm).
