Plans for new railway station get all clear signal

PLANNING chiefs at Warrington have given the all-clear signal to the detailed proposals for the long-awaited new West Warrington railway station, at Chapelford.
Originally approved in outline as far back as 2002 – but now members of the borough council’s development management committee has given the go ahead for the project.
A number of amendment have been made to detailed proposal approved two years ago – including a reduction in the size of the station building, re-positioning of the building, reconfiguration of the car park lay out and provision of a separate car park for mobility impaired drivers and electric vehicles.
Covers on the platforms, footbridge and stairs are now omitted – and the total number of car parking spaces is reduced to 285.
As previously, the station will be an entirely new facility on the southern edge of Chapelford with the aim of improving accessibility across the west and north of Warrington and servicing Chapelford itself, along with areas of growth such as Lingley Mere and Omega.
It is expected the station will attract about 800,000 passengers by 2025.
A public consultation indicated that more than three quarters of respondents are supportive of the station scheme and 77 per cent say they will use it.
The borough council is still pressing for improvements to be carried out at the nearby Sankey for Penketh station.
