THE “Skating Midwife” is kick-starting a fundraising campaign to redecorate Warrington’s Maternity & Neonatal units by roller skating between Halton Hospital and Warrington Hospital.

Carys Hammond, MLU Manager of the maternity unit, is aiming to raise £1,000 by making the 18km journey on September 24.

The Warrington and Halton Hospitals’ Charity feels the ward needs an interior to match its award-winning maternity service, as selected by the Royal College of Midwives as the best in the country in 2017.

Carys said, “As a midwife I am really passionate about making the stay in hospital for women and their families as welcoming, comfortable and homely as possible. I also love roller skating and do that in my spare time to keep fit and de-stress, so I’ve decided to combine the two to raise funds.”

Other staff members are taking part in or organising various fundraising activities, such as a team of student midwives who who completed The Christie’s Manchester to Blackpool bike ride (60km) in July.

Upcoming events include a half marathon to be completed by midwife Louise Peacock and a Tour De Maternity bike ride challenge organised by Sheila Murphy, Interim Matron for Maternity Inpatient Services Women’s Health.

Helen Higginson, Charity Fundraising Manager said, “We are hoping to raise an ambitious £15,000 through fundraising, which will help completely revamp the reception and waiting areas to create a colourful, welcoming and relaxing environment for expectant mums and their families.

“The overwhelming response we have already received is fabulous – I am hoping with the public’s support as well it will not take too long to achieve this amazing vision.”
