FORMER Mayor Faisal Rashid has set himself the challenge of becoming the best MP Warrington South has ever seen.

Commenting on his “roller coaster” journey to the House of Commons the newly elected Labour Member of Parliament for Warrington South said:”As you would expect, I am very emotional about being elected as your Member of Parliament for Warrington South.

“I am in awe at the support I have received from across the whole of this exceptional constituency and I have had so many kind messages of support and encouragement.

“The General Election campaign was a roller coaster for me. From being selected as the Labour Party candidate for Warrington South until being elected as the Member of Parliament for my home town the experience was truly amazing.

“I thank everyone who voted in Warrington South regardless of who they supported. I assure all constituents that I will work tirelessly on their behalf regardless of party, religion, politics, gender or creed.

“Like you I know that the challenges ahead of us are enormous but I look forward to addressing them together.

“I will always make sure I put Warrington South first. I was the first newly elected Labour Member of Parliament to be sworn in the House of Commons following the General Election.

“I will continue to raise the profile of our constituency at every opportunity.

Faisal intends to finish a number of local projects before standing down as a local councillor.

He added: “My commitment to the residents of Chapelford and Old Hall is longstanding and important to me. I am very proud to have served as their local councillor since 2011. This means that for the moment I am both their Member of Parliament and their local Councillor.

“For me the immediate challenge is being the best MP Warrington South has ever had. I intend to meet this challenge. In due course, after taking local soundings and listening to residents’
views, I will make a decision on when is the most appropriate time to stand down as a Borough Councillor. In the meantime I plan to see through a number of local projects and
ensure that I have done my best for the residents of the ward.

“We have had a lot of elections in Warrington in the last couple of years and I do not currently have a sense that there is any appetite locally for an early by-election.
Once again I want to thank all the residents of Warrington South who voted in the General Election and reaffirm my pledge to be a strong, trusted local voice, who they can rely upon to
deliver for this constituency.”

  1. I am delighted that Mr Faisal Rashid has been being elected South Warrington MP. A fresh, enthusiastic representative is exactly what we are in need of at this time!
Appleton / Grappenhall area are currently under threat of losing their green fields to mass housing development which is neither wanted nor needed.
Our previous (conservative) MP showed little concern, (the encroachment by developers on green land was a Conservative Government initiative) and thus Mr Mowatt has been merely citing the local Lib Dem councillors views that ‘previous permissions’ are ‘still valid’ and the best that can be achieved is the inclusion of supporting infrastructure.
The Lib Dem, pathetic, defeatist, misleading farce of a ‘campaign’ seems to be nothing but an attempt at political point scoring.
Warrington, has a town council with a large Labour majority, both our MP’s are now Labour – Conservative ideology should hold no sway here- our green fields and open spaces should be safe for future generations to enjoy.
Please Mr Rashid, can you fight for our green fields as fiercely as Helen Jones fights for those in the North of the town.
