World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

WARRINGTON Borough Council is supporting World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) by promoting the recently launched Herbert Protocol – a police scheme to improve responses when someone with dementia goes missing.

The Herbert Protocol is a form which is kept at home, or in a safe place, with important information about a vulnerable person. Should they go missing, information is easily on hand about routines, medical requirements and favourite places to visit and can be handed over to the police, alleviating the worry of collecting it together during a stressful time.

There will be a stand at Warrington Bus Interchange between 12-2pm on Thursday June 15 where information and advice will be available.

Cllr Pat Wright, executive board member for adult social care, said: “Warrington Borough Council is committed to preventing abuse and neglect. We want to ensure vulnerable residents of Warrington are able to live safely, free from the fear of abuse, neglect or victimisation. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day gave us an opportunity to raise the profile of this important issue and let people know that help is at hand if needed.

“We are fully supportive of the Herbert Protocol and would encourage people who care for someone with dementia to look into using this idea.”

Residents are encouraged to support the campaign by wearing a purple item of clothing to mark WEAAD or come along to the bus station to collect a purple ribbon.

If you want to speak to someone in confidence or are worried about an elderly family member or friend, contact the access social care team on 444239 Mon-Fri (444000 out of hours) or the police on 101.
