MORRIS Men helped keep the historic Lymm May Queen tradition alive after the annual event had to be cancelled following heavy rain during the night.

Members of Lymm Morris Men, who are part of Thelwall Morris, performed the ancient Lymm Morris Dance in the village centre, entertaining a few people who had turned up expecting to see the traditional May Queen parade.

Lymm May Queen Chairman Steve Harper and his team took the hard decision to cancel the parade and crowning due to the state of the Lymm May Queen field following torrential rain during the night.

They have now called an emergency committee meeting on Wednesday to discuss options to reschedule the event after being inundated with offers of support, which includ3 staging the crowning as part of one of the up coming Lymm Festival events.

Steve said: “We had no choice but to cancel because of the state of the May Queen field. It would have been badly damaged and needs to be in good condition for the up and coming Lymm Transport Day.

“It was boggy underfoot and would have also been dangerous to carry. We will now consider what options w ehave to re-arrange the event in some way.”

It is believed to be the first time in the history of the event, which dates back more than 100 years, that it has been cancelled due to bad weather.
