WARRINGTON born and bred Les Morgan has been appointed as the town’s 134th Mayor.

The former doorman, who worked at various nightclub’s around the town in his younger days and trade union stalwart, was unanimously elected during the annual  Mayor making ceremony at Warrington town hall.

Mayoress will be his wife Gwyn, while the new deputy mayor will be Cllr Karen Mundry.

Cllr Morgan, who represents the Latchford West Ward, says he aims to be the “Mayor who cares,” during his year of office.

He was nominated by Cllr David Keane, who described Cllr Morgan as his “mentor” after meeting him 20 years ago when he joined the local Labour group. He was seconded by fellow ward councillor Maureen McLaughlan.

Cllr Morgan said: “As the Mayor of Warrington I will be striving to promote the good news story that is Warrington.

“I will make sure everyone knows about our many and ongoing successes in developing the business and investment sectors.

“I have a great love for my town and I believe it’s a great place to call home.”

Cllr Morgan has been married to wife Gwyn for 41 years and has four children and eight grandchildren.

Representing the Latchford West ward Councillor Morgan, aged 75, is a former trade union official who worked for the GMB union. He is also a long-standing campaigner in the Warrington community who has a particular interest in protecting the most vulnerable residents. He was a founder member of St Werburgh’s community hub.

He enjoys most contact sports (particularly rugby league) and coarse fishing. He is a lifelong supporter of Warrington Wolves but says his greatest love is his family and home life.

The new Mayor has selected four charities for his term:

MS Society (Warrington)
The MS Society is a community of people living with Multiple Sclerosis: scientists, campaigners, volunteers and fundraisers.

Street Pastors (Warrington)
Street Pastors is an interdenominational network of Christian charities. Individual street pastors are Christian adults with a concern for their community, who undergo training to patrol the streets of towns and cities at night, helping and caring for people in practical ways.

Papyrus
Provides confidential help and advice to young people and anyone worried about a young person and helps others to prevent young suicide by working with and training professionals

Warrington Foodbank
Warrington foodbank provides three days’ nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people who are referred to us in crisis. It provided 4,892 meals last year.
