How the church can help fight depression

MENTAL health professionals are joining with the Methodist Church and other Christian denominations at Warrington to discuss the positive role  the church family can play in combating depression.
“Facing Depression Together” is a special day of themed talks and lectures being held on Saturday May 20 at The Centre, Birchwood Park, funded by the Methodist Church.
The event is free but spaces are limited with 150 tickets available.
Among those taking part in the event will be Danny Scunthorpe, a former Super League Rugby prop forward, offering a personal perspective of living with depression and part of State of Mind, a Rugby League mental health and wellness initiative.
Other discussions will include how churches can support those with mental health conditions through pastoral care and inclusion in the life of the church.
The event is part of PeerTalk, a new initiative which aims to establish a national network of volunteer facilitated peer group support meetings through churches for those with mental health issues and their
families.
One of the founders of PeerTalk, Philippa Normanton, commented: “Depression and mental health problems are very common but not widely understood.  This event is designed to help churches use their gifts to support those within their congregations and the wider community who live with the illness.”
This event and the PeerTalk initiative is supported by the Methodist Church but is open to all its ecumenical partners with attendees welcome to those from all churches and those of none.
Further details and booking information are available on the website, www.peertalk.org.uk
