Yellows finish season with a draw

WARRINGTON Town have finished their first season in the Evo-Stik Premier League in 10th place.

The Yellows rounded off their 2016-17 season with a 1-1 draw against Matlock Town.

Michael Bakare’s first half goal had given them the advantage in Derbyshire, but the game turned on a controversial red card handed to Mitch Duggan in first half stoppage time.

The numerical disadvantage ultimately worked against Paul Carden’s men, with Adam Yates’ equaliser earning the hosts a draw and ensuring they remained above Warrington in the table.

Having only come up as champions last season, the Yellows still had a chance of the play-offs until the last couple of weeks, and were only mathematically ruled out of the running on Monday.

Looking ahead to next season, one fixture to keep an eye on will be a local derby against Altrincham, who have been relegated from National League North.

Matlock Town: Barnes, Marsden, Green, Doyle-Charles, Yates, Wiley, McManus, Williams, Newsham, Dinanga, Cribley. Subs: Sharpe, Taylor, Wright, Morrison, Degirolamo.

Warrington Town: McMillan, Carden, Askew, Ventre, McCarten, Gumbs, Vassallo, Duggan, Bakare, Bakkor, Codling. Subs: Monaghan, Smart, Lewis, Shaw.
