World class jazz star to appear in Warrington

AMERICAN tenor sax star Chris Potter will bring Warrington a rare opportunity to hear top class jazz next month.
Potter will be playing at The Pyramid on Friday, April 14 with the Inner City Ensemble – a group of emerging British musicians.
In the past, the Parr Hall has played host to a number of top jazz stars, including trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and French violinist Stephan Grappelli. But in recent years Warrington – once a hot-bed of jazz because of the influence of the US Army base at Burtonwood – has heard little.
Chris Potter has been described as ““one of the most studied (and copied) saxophonists on the planet” while Jazz Times identified him as “a figure of international renown”.
In 2008 readers of the influential Down Beat magazine voted him second only to the great Sonny Rollins on tenor sax.
A potent improviser and the youngest musician ever to win Denmark’s Jazzpar Prize, Potter’s impressive discography includes 15 albums as a leader, and sideman appearances on more than 100 albums.
He was nominated for a Grammy Award for his solo work on In Vogue, a track from Joanne Brackeen’s 1999 album Pink Elephant Magic, and was prominently featured on Steely Dan’s Grammy-winning album from 2000, Two Against Nature.
He has performed or recorded with many of the leading names in jazz including Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland, John Scofield, the Mingus Big Band, Jim Hall, Paul Motian, Dave Douglas, Ray Brown and many others.
