Discarded cigarette costs smoker £450

SMOKING turned out to be an even more expensive habit for one Warrington motorist after she was seen throwing a cigarette out of her car window.

Amy Crossley, from Oklahoma Boulevard, Chapelford, was spotted discarding the cigarette on Sankey Street by a Warrington Borough Council officer in July 2016.

The 27-year-old was issued with a fixed penalty notice for £50 – which she failed to pay. After a series of reminders the defendant still did not pay the fine and was taken to court by Warrington Borough Council.

In a hearing at Warrington Magistrates’ Court, earlier this month Amy Crossley was fined £220, ordered to pay a £30 victim surcharge and £200 in costs.

Cllr Judith Guthrie, executive board member for the environment, said: “Littering is not acceptable in any circumstances and everyone should take responsibility for disposing of their rubbish responsibly for the sake of the rest of the community.

“This case also illustrates that, if you are issued with a fixed penalty notice, you should pay it as soon as you can – as the alternative can be very expensive.”

  1. Just wondering….was she parked up when she threw it out of her car window or driving? The council warden must be very quick with a camera to catch actual photo evidence if she was driving. Serves her right for ignoring the fixed penalty though either way….

Shame they can’t issue similar fines to the likes of the Travellers who were on Centre Park (and thankfully have now left). They left piles of rubbish including mattresses, dirty nappies and a whole host of other things as well as causing what can only be described as criminal damage to nearby buildings. How come they always just get away with it !! GRRR !!
