Last chance to see World War 1 exhibition

THERE are just 12 days left to see a fascinating display of propaganda posters used by the Government during the First World War, at Warrington Museum and Art Gallery.

The exhibits in display, entitled “Your Country Needs You!” were created by the government to persuade men to join the armed forces after the country went to war in August 1914.

They became increasingly necessary as the war dragged on for four long years – brightly coloured posters with striking images and memorable slogans were the ideal means of mass communication in an age before television, the internet and social media.

Many also featured messages for those living on the Home Front. For example, housewives were told that not wasting bread could help defeat the U-boat and bring about victory.

“Your Country Needs You!” ends on Saturday February 4.

But another exhibition currently being featured at the museum and art gallery to mark the 100th anniversary of the First World War, “Keep the Home Fires Burning” focuses on life on the Home Front, and this continues until March 11.

As Warrington’s men were away fighting in the trenches of the Western Front, munitions girls, nurses, aid workers, conscientious objectors and the women left behind fighting on the “kitchen front” all had their part to play in the story of these tumultuous years.

“Keep the Home Fires Burning” features local photography which captures this extraordinary time in history.
