PROSPECTIVE students, interested in a career in public service attended a day-long event at the Warrington Campus of the University of Chester.
The successful, cross-departmental event focused on careers in policing, social work, teaching and health care, including nursing and midwifery.
A Level and first year BTEC students had the opportunity to gain an insight into the skills and responsibilities involved in a public service role, as well as experience life on a university campus.
Traci Whitfield, co-ordinator for partnerships in the Faculty of Health and Social Care, said: “Prospective students were able to work with the university’s lecturers, as well as current students, in a variety of interactive sessions. They were given a real life scenario, which tied all of the subject sessions together, allowing the students to explore issues and understand how all of the individual sectors work together on a daily basis.”
Sean Williamson, outreach manager at the university, added: “The day consisted of lots of different sessions with lecturers in each of the public services. The students were able to really interact with their chosen career path, while also gaining an insight into other careers which they may not have considered but would impact them in their future roles.
“Everyone really enjoyed the day and it was great to see how all of these areas work together here at the university. We’re planning to continue running future events like this in order to provide prospective students with the opportunity, not only to increase their awareness of their future career possibilities, but also to understand how the multi-sector approach may work in the real world.”
