Burtonwood base lectures are a sell out success

A series of lectures on the history of RAF Burtonwood are a sell out success- thanks to warrington-worldwide.

The lectures which focus on the American occupation during and after World war II, are being given by Burtonwood Association Honorary lifetime president
Aldon Ferguson at the Gulliver’s Hotel.

The first event yook place last night and Aldon has been overwhemeled with the response from warrington-worldwide readers.

He said: Just a note to say a great thank You for the article on my lectures in the January edition on Warrington Worldwide.

“I have had so many replies that we filled the first series almost immediately and I have enough on my reserve list to fill a second series later this year.

“The power of your magazine obviously is extremely successful and certainly spread the word and created considerable interest.

“I will be re-running the lectures later this year and hope I may be able to utilise your excellent communications again then!”

The Burtonwood airfield first opened in 1940 and was transferred to the US Army in 1942. It was at one time the largest airfield in Europe, with 18,000
servicemen and women stationed there and played a key role during the Berlin Airlift in 1948-48.

It again became a major US base in 1966 when it became what was said to be the largest ilitary storage depot in Europe after the US were force to close down
depots in France. The main warehouse was said to be the largest building under a single roof in Europe.

The base finally closed in 1994 and the site is now largely occupied by the Omega development site and Chapelford urban village.
