STEPHEN Dean and Tara Jones shared the Eric Lawrinson Referee of the Year award at the Warrington Rugby League Referees’ Society annual awards evening.

The award, voted on by referee coaches and referee appointments officers across the sport, saw the two recipients tied on equal votes meaning there was no way to present the award to a single winner.

Stephen Dean had a successful 2016 season, refereeing marquee youth and junior matches within the community game, and was also awarded the North West Youth Rugby League Referee of the Year.

Stephen said: “I’m gobsmacked. I honestly didn’t think I would get this award. To be recognised for my performances throughout the season is overwhelming.”

Tara Jones’ crowning achievement saw her make her National Conference League refereeing debut, being the first female referee to do so in six years. Tara said: “It’s been a pretty successful season, and I’m really proud of what I’ve achieved this year.”

Other awards presented on the night include Young Referee of the Year, which went to Ollie Maddock for the second year in a row. Most Improved Referee of the Year was awarded to Phil Sailsbury, while the Joe Manley Cup for services to the society was presented to Nick Woodward.

Former society secretary and treasurer, Sue Williams, was thanked and presented with flowers and a gift card for ten years of service in an off-field role.
