A touch rugby team which only started out at the beginning of this year have been acknowledged at Warrington’s Man of Steel Awards.

The Fit To Tackle team were presented the Master Rugby Award at the Halliwell Jones Stadium event.

The annual awards acknowledge individuals or teams who have excelled in Warrington over the last 12 months in community rugby league.

The team includes 25 men who successfully completed LiveWire’s and Warrington Wolves’ Fit To Tackle programme.

The free programme challenges them to take part in physical activities every week and helping them to improve their diet and also aims to improve the health and wellbeing of people who don’t generally exercise.

Participants on the programme take part in three exercise sessions a week covering all kinds of physical activity including Touch Rugby to increase their strength and to help them drop off the pounds.

Fit To Tackle has supported the men in the Fit To Tackle rugby team to lose 40 stone altogether, and since they formed the squad at the beginning of this year they have played 12 full matches, winning ten.

The team plan to play a full calendar of fixtures next year, who are coached by Paul Corless and Tom Kearny from LiveWire.

Paul, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for the team in their first 12 months of playing together.

“The lads worked really hard on the programme to get fit and lose weight and their determination and dedication has continued on the pitch.”
