Stoptober helps reduce Warrington smoking rates to 14%

PEOPLE across Warrington joined tens of thousands of people in the UK choosing to turn their back on cigarettes this month in the mass 28-day stop smoking challenge, Stoptober.

Research shows that stopping smoking for 28 days can extend your life by up to one week if you remain smoke-free.

The new ex-smokers across Warrington are celebrating their first steps towards a healthier, smoke free life and are being encouraged by experts to keep going.

The average smoker has 13 cigarettes a day, which equates to 364 cigarettes every four weeks. Stoptober would have saved them £141 each over four weeks and if they remain smoke-free, they could save £1,696 in a year.

Paul Roberto, senior LiveWire advisor for stop smoking, said: “Well done to everyone who has successfully taken part in Stoptober this year in Warrington. We know it can be hard.

“If you missed Stoptober or found it difficult to stay smoke free in October, it’s never too late to start your own 28 day quit attempt.

“There is still a wide range of support available. LiveWire’s stop smoking service provides free advice and support and our advisors are available throughout the year.

“Research shows that by using local stop smoking services you are four times more likely to quit than going it alone, so please get in touch for support.”

Stoptober has already helped made a big impact on the local community, helping to lower smoking rates to just 14% in Warrington over the last few years.

Warrington Borough Council’s executive board member for public health and wellbeing, Cllr Maureen McLaughlin, said: “It has been another successful Stoptober in Warrington. Quitting can be extremely difficult, but the campaign has once again given local people the incentive they need to say goodbye to cigarettes for good.

“Giving up smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health, so it’s great news that many more Warrington residents have taken up the challenge this year.

“It’s important that you keep going, and take advantage of all the support that is available, so that you can continue to enjoy all the benefits that come from being smoke-free.”
