Community library team visits Dallam Primary School

LiveWire’s community library team have visited Dallam Primary School as part of the Delivering Wellbeing in Bewsey Dallam initiative.

The visit earlier this month was part of the school’s Hopes and Dreams Week which invites community organisations and businesses to inspire the children to think about future careers.

The community library team shared the story ‘Kitchen Disco’ with the children and their parents and carers to promote reading for pleasure and early story sharing.

The children had each already received a copy of the story via the Booktrust ‘Time to Read’ scheme so many were already familiar with it and joined in enthusiastically. They also produced their own stick puppets to help re-tell the story.

The visit encouraged many of the parents to sign up to Reading Ahead to challenge themselves to read more widely and model reading for their children.

Chris Everett, senior LiveWire advisor for reading, said: “The children had so much fun and the parents really enjoyed having the chance to come into school and join in the activity with their children.

“We are also planning to go back to the school to complete a class visit to encourage more children to sign up for a library membership.”

  1. If the visit “……….was part of the school’s Hopes and Dreams Week which invites community organisations and businesses to inspire the children to think about future careers”. What was library services doing there? If the library closures go ahead there won’t be any future careers for librarians!

This visit seems to be what Livewire have been terming “other activities” for which the savings made by closing the libraries will be used. But are these types of activities really needed? Are not the qualified teaching staff supposed to encourage children to read? It seems to me that the only thing these “activities” are achieving is creating work and “future careers” for livewire employees. Whilst sadly, the trained librarians we currently have will soon be made redundant.
