MP calls for more transparency over library consultations

MP Helen Jones has called on LiveWire to be more transparent about the ongoing consultation into possible library closures across Warrington.

The Warrington North MP has been made aware of ‘briefing notes’ being circulated by the Managing Director of LiveWire, Emma Hutchinson, which summarise points from each consultation meeting that has so far taken place.

She says there is no briefing note for the meeting that took place in Culcheth recently.

Ms Jones said: “I am concerned about reports stating that there is no Briefing Note for the meeting held at Culcheth Library.

“I understand that residents and local Councillors made a number of passionate representations and the absence of notes from this meeting leads us to ask what it is that LiveWire are hiding.

“Additionally, the accuracy of the other Briefing Notes is also questionable, with a number who were present asking ‘were they at the same meeting as I was?’

“This is an issue that has left residents worried about the closure of their local library and I therefore call on LiveWire to be more transparent during the remainder of the consultation process.”
But a LiveWire spokesperson said: “We have been transparent in all aspects of this consultation. We know how important this process is and we are absolutely committed to giving everyone the opportunity to have their say.

“The briefings in question were internal documents and were intended solely for LiveWire board members, to keep them abreast of the general tone and some of the key points raised at the meetings. These internal briefings are not aimed at the public and do not represent or include the full consultation detail.

“We have two officers dedicated to carrying out a thorough overview of all of the meetings, including the Culcheth meeting. They are collating all of the information and this will be included in the final report which will be publicly available.”
