Rugby fans warned of traffic delays due to Winwick Road emergency works

WARRINGTON council is warning rugby fans attending the match at the Halliwell Jones stadium tonight (Friday 16 September) to expect traffic delays in the area, due to emergency gas works.

The works, being carried out by The National Grid on Winwick Road, are likely to cause some congestion. However, the council is working with the utility company to try to minimise disruption as much as possible.

The gas escape was reported last week at the site of the Tesco petrol station at the junction with Long Lane and required ‘immediate action’ under the National Grid’s safety criteria.

Excavation works began immediately to prevent the situation from worsening. The council agreed with The National Grid that the work would be completed by today, 16 September, due to events planned in Warrington over the weekend – including tonight’s match between Warrington Wolves and Wigan Warriors.

However, the pace of the work has been slowed due to the depth of the gas main and work being interrupted by a burst water main. National Grid operatives are currently working double shifts to complete the work as quickly as possible, but currently, the gas main is still leaking.

A Warrington Borough Council traffic signal engineer will be on site at Winwick Road between 9pm and 11pm this evening, to manually operate the signals and ensure congestion is kept to a minimum.

  1. Sounds like the Gas men burst a water main, and the traffic officer will be operating the lights between 9pm & 11pm that will really help fans to get there for 8pm
