WORK has started on site on the long-awaited new changing rooms at Culcheth’s Shaw Street recreation ground.
Tree surgeons are removing a number of trees which stand in the way of the new building
Construction of the new building has also started off-site, according to Cllr Sue Bland.
She said: “There have been delays but IO have chased this up with the Town Hall and have been told working is starting at last.
“It is now hoped the work will be completed towards the end of the year. But originally it should have been done by last October.”
The project has been beset by delays from the outset.
At the planning stage there were hold-ups because it was decided a tree survey should be carried out.
The scheme will involve demolition of the existing sub-standard building and construction of a steel modular building to serve as a sports changing complex, kitchen, toilets and a room suitable for community meetings. The new building will occupy the same site as the old, but will be slightly larger, taking in an area of hard-standing surrounding the current building.
A number of trees will be removed, but new ones will replace them.
Despite the increase in size, the majority of the new building will be screened from view from Shaw Street by an existing storage building and from Warrington Road by existing trees and planting.
There will no loss of playing field space.
