Grandma donates prize as thank you to charity

A Latchford grandma who won a £250 voucher used it to buy a wheelchair which she has donated to Warrington Disability Partnership’s loan service.

Helen Cox of Latchford, won the voucher at the recent 25th anniversary Warrington Disability Awareness day and donated it to buy a wheelchair as a thank you to the charity.

The competition was hosted by sponsors of DAD, NRS Healthcare – the UK’s leading provider of Community Equipment, Wheelchair and Clinical Services, as a way to give back to the local community.

Two other entrants also won a £150 voucher and £50 voucher respectively, with Helen walking away with the top prize of £250 to spend on her choice of daily living aids.

Rather than buying equipment for herself, Helen thought back to when her husband, Eric, needed a wheelchair a few years ago and decided she wanted to help others in a similar situation.

“Thankfully, my husband only needed the wheelchair for a few months but even in that short space of time, it made such a difference to his independence. I wanted the prize to make a real difference to someone and by giving the WDP a brand new wheelchair for their Loan Service, I know it will be put to good use.”

Dave Thompson MBE DL, Founder and Chief Executive of Warrington Disability Partnership, was thrilled with Helen’s decision and is in full admiration of her generosity.

“Helen’s selflessness has touched everyone here at WDP. Despite having a huge range of equipment to choose from, which could be of use to her and Eric as they grow older together, Helen has instead used her winnings to buy us a beautiful new wheelchair for our Loan Service which will help a great many people. We can’t thank her enough – it is a wonderful gift which will give others greater independence in their everyday lives.”

As Commercial Director of NRS Healthcare, Stephen Kennedy has been the driving force behind the company sponsoring the Silver Anniversary of this year’s Disability Awareness Day and launching the free competition at the event to give members of the community the opportunity to win hundreds of pounds worth of daily living aids.

“Since meeting Dave and seeing his wonderful passion for DAD, he has inspired me to get involved in something which I think is very, very special. This year may have been NRS Healthcare’s first appearance at Disability Awareness Day but it certainly won’t be the last.

“Dave and his team of volunteers work wonders in creating a safe space for all people, regardless of age or ability, to come together and discover real products and services which are available to assist those living with a long-term health condition or disability.

“I’m delighted that NRS Healthcare has been able to not only give back to members of the local community but also continue to support Warrington Disability Partnership in our mutual goal of pushing the boundaries of daily living aids, whilst continuing to raise awareness of what is available to make everyday tasks easier for disabled people and their families.”
