GRAPPENHALL won a remarkable match at Marple to remain second in the division one of the Vivio Cheshire County League.
It represented a great comeback from a seemingly desperate position and was an indication of the side’s resilience.
Marple posted 194-5 in 50 overs, with 18-year-old Albert Pennington the pick of the bowling with 2-37 off 10 overs.
Grappers got off to the worst possible starts when they replied, with the top order crumbling to the pace of Marples’ overseas quick bowler.
At 54-5, Grappenhall were in deep trouble. Pennington, who had gone in at three, was still there and scored a valuable 57, support by his younger brother Arthur, 19.
Gaz Burns joined Albert and took the fight to the Marple attack with a blistering 55. When both Gaz and Albert fell, Dan Osborne and Alex Mathews saw the side home with an over and two wickets to spare.
In a similar game, Grappenhall 2nd earned a draw against Nantwich.
The visitors posted 195 and reduced Grappers to 36-6.
But Matt Titchard produced an excellent half century to breath life back into the innings and in the end Grappers were only 15 runs short of their target with one wicket remaining.
On Sunday, Grappenhall progressed into the semi final of the Cheshire Cup with a fine victory over Premier league side Toft.
Grappers posted a formidable 288-6 in 45 overs with Adam Roylance scoring a magnificent century.
Albert Pennington registered another half century and James McCoy hit a blistering 41.
One incident worthy of note came when Roylance was on 94 and slipped when going for a quick single.
His partner, overseas player Ryan Ninan went for an extra run, ensure the batsmen crossed and was so the one to be run out, enabling Roylance to continue.
Toft went for the runs but were all out for 209. Ninan took 4-43 and Arran McCabe 3-17.
Grappenhall 3rd held on for a draw at Sale after the home side had set a target of 189. Mike Holden took three wickets.
Grappers held on at 150-8 at the close.

Batting first, Warrington reached 171-8, Malcolm Agar hitting 59 and skipper Richard Heaney 29 not out.  Cheadle Hulme coasted to 174-7, Huw Stone bowling well for 4-54 and Ashley Scholes 2-39.
In the Cheshire League, Lymm Oughtrington Park were humbled for 72 at Romikly and then watched as the home side cantered to 76-1.
But  Lymm Oughtrington Park 2nd game will live long in all-rounder Shovan Chattergee’s memory, despite visitors Romily claiming the honours.
Chattergee took a hat-trick with the last three balls of Romily’s innings, finishing with 4-63.
He then went on to top-score with 42 as Lymm were bowled out for 77.
Appleton bowled out Alderley Park for 66 at Lyons Lane, Kanthiraj Gavaskar taking 3-17 and Tom Lomas 4-13.
Appleton replied with 67-2, Antony Hurst hitting 23 not out and Lomas 18 not out.
