WARRINGTON’S Mayor Faisal Rashid was on hand to launch the town’s sixth annual Mela – an Indian word which means gathering or festival.
A street procession left the town hall to Palmyra Square, where the mayor officially launched the event, which featured entertainment from around the world as well as a chance to attend lectures on culture and mental health.
Cllr Rashid was delighted with the huge turn out saying: “The event celebrates diversity in the town and brings communities together, while giving people the chance to showcase their individual cultures.
“In the last five years our population of ethnic minorities has increased so it is important to stage these type of events to bring people together and improve community cohesion.
“I want to thank Warrington Ethnic Communities Association and their partners for their work. The council has been great and has provided key funding for the event.”
The Mela has grown in popularity year on year, attracting just 500 people in year one and now several thousand.
