Five primary schools earn top PE accreditation

FIVE primary schools in Warrington have been awarded special accreditation for physical education and school sports.

St Barnabas CE, Stockton Heath, Newchurch Community, Culcheth Community and Locking Stumps Community Primary Schools are now all accredited with the Association for PE (afPE) Quality Mark.

The prestigious award is only given to schools that show continuous development, outstanding practise, and innovation in high quality physical education and sport.

The award will raise the profile of the subject and the school on a local and national level and will promote the high quality work that is being undertaken on a day-to-day basis.

All schools completed a rigorous assessment process with LiveWire’s PE and School Sports Team to achieve the accreditation which is a bench mark and industry standard for high quality.

Jan Parker, PE and school sport programme manager at LiveWire, said: “After a tough assessment process, it is a fantastic achievement for these five schools to have achieved the afPE Quality Mark.

“High quality physical education and sport makes a difference to the learning and experiences of children and young people both within the subject and more widely across the curriculum.

“This award will support the schools to promote a positive message to the local community and to continue to provide an excellent standard of physical education which makes them stand out from the crowd.”

In the latest round of awards, Locking Stumps Community Primary School was one of only four schools nationally to achieve the award with a distinction.

Jane Evans, head teacher of Locking Stumps Community Primary School, said: “We are extremely proud and thrilled to be one of only four schools in the country to have achieved a distinction in the afPE Quality Mark.

“This is recognition for the hard work that we have put into improving our PE provision and providing high quality sporting opportunities for our children.”

The afPE Quality Mark was developed in 2012 to give recognition for excellence in the subject when the Ofsted individual subject inspections were abolished.

The House of Commons Select Committee recommends that schools are encouraged by the Department for Education (DFE) to apply for this award.
