Birchwood firefighters scale heights

Birchwood on-call firefighters scaled new heights to raise money for The Fire Fighters Charity at the weekend.

The crew took it in turns to climb a ladder set up on scaffolding outside Birchwood Shopping Centre in a bid to raise money for the cause.

Led by watch manager Mark Pollard, they climbed the ladder 624 times, which is just over 4990 metres, and equates to the number of firefighters currently serving with Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service.

The crew raised just over £400 on the day for the charity which provides physical rehabilitation and recuperation to members of the fire and rescue community in times of need.

Over the years, the charity has helped hundreds of thousands of individuals by providing world-class treatment and support services and has three centres in Devon, Cumbria and West Sussex.

It costs over £9 million per year to keep the Charity running, and is completely reliant upon donations and fundraising.

On-call watch manager Mark Pollard said: “We would like to thank everyone who came along and supported us while we were climbing the ladder and to everyone who donated money.

“Also thanks to Birchwood shopping centre for allowing us to use the area and to Twin Towers Hire Ltd who kindly provided the scaffolding.”

An on-call firefighter is a person who is ‘on call’ to respond to a range of emergencies. They are doing everyday jobs (for example, shop workers, office workers, mechanics, etc) until the call comes, then they become professional firefighters.

They are trained and capable people in the front line, saving lives, and are well paid for their services. They receive thorough training to deal with any emergency situation.
