Concerns over village green for Community Day

FEARS are growing for the Culcheth Community Day event scheduled for Saturday week (July 9), with the village green still suffering from drainage problems following recent heavy rains.

After the community day postponed from the May Bank Holiday due to poor weather, it was hoped a sunny spell would dry out the grass on the village green.

Paul Taylor from Taylor Business Park, who are supporting the event, said: “So far it isn’t looking good but everyone has their fingers crossed.

“The green still has substantial drainage issues which we hope the council will soon resolve, and when you couple that with the awful run of weather we’ve had recently it will need a good run of very good and hot weather to get everything in a fit state for the big day.

Local councillors have been asking the council to take a look at the green for some time now.

Matt Smith, Councillor for Culcheth, Glazebury and Croft said: “Myself and Cllr Joan Grime brought the Council’s Chief Executive, Professor Steven Broomhead, to Culcheth to view the problems with the Green for himself a few weeks ago. Following this meeting he has instructed senior Council officers
to assess the cost of the work required to solve the drainage issues.

“Once the costings have been done we will be looking at the possibilities for funding the work, most likely via the Council’s capital programme”.

The Culcheth Community Day is still set to go ahead on July 9.
