THE Friends of St Mary’s Cemetery and the local Royal British Legion are holding an event to mark 100 years since the start of The Battle of the Somme.

On July 2 between 10am and 2pm, an informal gathering will be held to commemorate that battle and at 12 noon, people will assemble at the War Memorial to remember.

Local heroes Gunner Fred Gould, Private Howard Berry, Second Lieutenant John Harold Ryle Jones and Private Joseph Keenan will also be remembered.

Penketh Detachment, Cheshire Army Cadets help out each week in the cemetery, and they will join the gathering paying special attention to cleaning War Graves and paying respects.

The Battle of the Somme was the largest battle of World War 1, taking place between July 1 and November 18, and more than one million men were wounded of killed, making it one of the bloodiest battles in human history.

Please come and join us at the cemetery in St Mary’s Road, Penketh any time during the day and help us to truly remember them.

Light refreshments will be available after the midday ceremony.
