Emotional Weather

HAVE you ever considered describing your varying emotional states as being similar to the changes in weather patterns that happen on any given day?

For instance, the recent changes in our weather that occurred during the last few days of April; with the sudden shift from sunny spells then cloud, to rain and sleet, then to hail and snow, and very quickly back to sunny spells; then repeating similar patterns throughout the day. Some of us may have also experienced some thunder and lightning, as well as changes in the wind speed from stillness to breezy to blustery and back again to stillness.

When you are aware of your own emotional states in relation to your every day experiences, you may have noticed your change in mood can shift rapidly, similar to the change in weather patterns I have just described. You may have woken up feeling calm and quiet inside, to then react very quickly to a loved one’s insensitive behaviour, by feeling let down, upset, irritated and then angry.

However, once you have had time to discuss and understand what had caused their behaviour, and realise that there was a misunderstanding between you, then perhaps your mood would have shifted to either feeling guilty or relieved, to accepting and loving, then recapturing the calmness and quietness inside again.

Hopefully the good feelings would remain during the day, and all experiences that day would remain positive, just like the sun shining bright for the rest of the day. However, there may have been further difficulties to test your patience and affect your mood throughout the rest of the day, or for several days after, just like a cold front bringing wind and rain that stays around for days.

If you can relate your emotional states as being similar to the patterns of the weather, then perhaps you may recognise how quickly your emotions can shift and never stay the same for too long. This awareness may empower you to more easily ride the highs and lows, and quickly navigate the challenges and disappointments, just as a sailor has to learn to navigate the changing weather patterns when sailing through the ocean; through bobbing waters then within minutes lowering the sails for an approaching force 10 storm!

Once the storm has been successfully navigated, a breeze may then return, bringing relief, as the sails can then be hoisted and a more pleasant journey to be enjoyed. The sailor may also gain increased confidence in their own abilities navigating the changing weather and sea conditions on their journey. You can similarly learn to successfully navigate through your difficult experiences and challenges, as well as the enjoyable moments throughout life, and begin to fully acknowledge your own skills and abilities.

You may then truly appreciate the silver lining which often peaks through the clouds, as you continue your life’s journey navigating the ebbs and flows, and the constant changes in emotional weather, which we all have to contend with, and enable us to build our resilience and inner strength.

If you would like to discuss how to successfully navigate your emotional reactions to life experiences; then please contact either myself or my partner, Cate on 01925 658322 to arrange an Initial Consultation.
