Demolition work set to start on town centre car park

DEMOLITION work is set to start on the Academy Way town centre car park so construction work can start on a brand new multi-storey car park as part of the council’s £107 million Time Square regeneration scheme.

Warrington Borough Council (WBC) has announced that closure and demolition of the existing multi-storey car park will start on June 1.

The new car-park will provide circa 1,150 of secure car parking spaces over 8 levels and will be integral in supporting Warrington town centre’s overall car parking offer.

Following on from the closure of the existing multi storey car park the demolition will then take place to allow for the construction of the new car park to start on site in Autumn 2016. Completion of the brand new parking facility is anticipated for October 2017.

David Boyer, Assistant Director for Transport & Environment for Warrington Borough Council said: “Whilst construction of the new multi-storey car park is taking shape it is our aim to keep any disruption to a minimum and ensure that there is adequate provision of parking facilities within the town centre. Warrington town centre has a current availability of approximately 3, 694 car parking spaces, easily accessible across 17 sites and all within easy reach of the immediate town centre and shopping areas.”

Planning approval was granted for the multi-storey car park earlier this year and last month Warrington based construction specialist I & H Brown was awarded the £18.5 million Time Square car park construction contract by WBC.

Councillor Terry O’Neill, Leader of Warrington Borough Council said: “The construction and delivery of secure and convenient parking facilities is a vital part of the Time Square regeneration project as it will provide a new and attractive asset that will underpin and support the whole scheme. The construction of the new car park is another positive step towards the realisation of this ambitious development and wider benefits for the rest of the town centre.”

The Time Square regeneration scheme – that has been driven and will be delivered by Warrington & Co. on behalf of Warrington Borough Council with development manager Muse Developments – will create up to 400 construction jobs and 400 new permanent jobs in the leisure, retail and restaurant sectors when the whole project is fully completed in 2019.

  1. If the rest of the Time Square development wont be fully completed until 2019 , by which I presume they mean the cinema, offices and the new market (not the temp one that is currently being built), then isn’t it a bit premature to close and start demolishing the existing car next week? It’s used by a lot of people and at £1 for up to 3 hours is great value and must draw people in to the market side of town too so chances are anyone parking there will walk through the market and and look at the stalls and buy things.
Once it’s closed next week then people will have to park elsewhere and if that’s in the Golden Square multi story car park chances are they wont bother going out of there and across to the current or even temporary market putting another nail in the coffin for existing market traders 🙁
