Personal statements on a CV – right or wrong?

0

THIS is something that many people ask when updating their CV and it is a really important part of the document that should not be missed, says Ian Mountford from St John Recruitment.

The reader of the CV can work out very quickly what you are all about if you use specific information about yourself in this section and avoid vague and intangible details such as information about your character or personality.

The three key things to include in any profile:
• Who you are
• What you are looking for
• What you are good at

‘Who you are’ is essential to describe yourself effectively from a professional standpoint. ‘HR Manager’ sounds very different to ‘highly experienced HR professional managing a team of three advisors’, for example.

‘What you are looking for’ should be very clear. Recruiters are never all that interested in having to read too deeply into a CV to see what it is that you are looking for so it makes sense to express this clearly and put it at the very beginning of the document.

‘What you are good at’ should always be presented at the very beginning of the document. Stick to no more than three key skill areas that are easily evidenced within the rest of your CV and you will immediately create the right impression in the mind of the reader who has these skills at the top of their specific wanted list.

Keep the reader in mind at all times when writing your CV and your profile will go a long way towards creating the opportunities you are looking for.
